ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Members of a task force charged with overseeing implementation of new trucking rules said the state Department of Transportation has scrapped a proposal to ban large trucks from seven state highways in the Finger Lakes.
The New York Farm Bureau said it’s pleased the DOT reconsidered.
Acting DOT Commissioner Stanley Gee announced the decision April 12 to Gov. David Paterson’s Trucking Industry and Community Relations Task Force, saying the proposal would have simply rerouted trucks through neighboring communities.
Task force member George Farenthold said DOT had “totally capitulated to the trucking industry and its political allies.”
DOT spokeswoman Deborah Rausch said the agency “has taken actions to reduce through-truck traffic and will continue to work to mitigate oversized and overweight through-trucking activity in the region.”
