The Southeast Pennsylvania Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recognized contractors and projects at its Eleventh Annual Awards Banquet held on Nov. 14.
E. Allen Reeves Inc., of Abington, PA, was selected as the 2001 General Contractor of the Year, and Benner & White Construction Inc., of Harleysville, PA, was selected as the 2001 Specialty Contractor of the Year.
E. Allen Reeves Inc. is a full-service construction manager and general contractor founded in 1918 with a staff and field force of 85 people.
The firm focuses primarily on private, non-profit, institutional clients and facilities in Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Robert N. Reeves Jr. serves as president of the company.
Benner & White Construction Inc. is a specialty contractor that specializes in metal studs, wood studs, insulation, drywall, acoustical ceilings, wall treatments, finish carpentry, EIFS systems and related tasks.
Douglas R. White is the president of the company.
“These two firms certainly represent the finest qualities one could hope for in a construction company. And, both companies generously share their resources with their respective communities,” Geoffrey N. Zeh, executive vice president, said.
In addition, ABC recognized 16 projects as recipients of the Eleventh Annual Merit Construction Award of Excellence.
In the Institutional Under $2-Million category Trinity Episcopal Church in Buckingham, PA, won top honors.
Happ Contractors Inc. of Doylestown, was the general contractor and Lynch Martinez Architects designed the project.
Taking first place in the Institutional $2- to $5- million categories was E. Allen Reeves Inc., an Abington-based general contractor/construction manager, for Newtown Friends School in Newtown.
The architect was Wallace Roberts & Todd LLC.
In the Institutional Over $5 Million category, C. Raymond Davis & Sons Inc., a general contractor in Kimberton, won for the Foulkeways at Gwynedd.
This project was designed by Reese, Lower, Patrick & Scott.
The Best Heavy Construction-Infrastructure Project award went to Allan A. Myers Inc., a Worcester based contractor, for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Fort Washington Slip Ramp.
The project was designed by URS Greiner Woodward-Clyde.
Delran Builders Co. Inc. was the winner in the Restoration/Renovation Under $1 Million category for the Melrose Diner renovation in Philadelphia.
Patricia Gorman Associates designed this project.
In the Restoration/Renovation Over $1 Million category, Carroll Contractors Inc., a contractor in Haverford, took home top honors for the construction of its new corporate offices in Haverford.
The design of this building was a collaborative effort by Carroll Contractors, John Burzynski Associates and Kim Petrella Designs.
The Best Public Construction-Electric project award went to State Electric, a Norristown-based contractor, for Kathryn D. Markley Elementary School in Malvern.
The project was designed by Noelker and Hull.
Drum Construction Co. Inc. of Telford, was the winner in the Specialty Sitework/Landscape category for the Quality Stores in Quakertown.
This was designed by Robert Buckley Architect.
In the Residential, Single Family category, a private residence in Oley finished first.
Kaiser Construction Co., Inc. was the general contractor and Towers & Miller Architect designed the project.
E. Allen Reeves Inc., a general contractor/construction manager in Abington, was the winner in the Residential, Multi-Family category for the White Horse Village project in Newtown Square.
The project was designed by Bernardon & Associates.
Universal Millwright Co., Inc. of Franconia came in first place in the Industrial category for the FiberMark-Warren Glen Mill in Bloomsbury, NJ.
This project was designed by Roger Thibodeau, PE.
Corrado & Sons Inc., was the winner in the Specialty Exterior category for the Villanova University West Dormitory expansion.
This was designed by The Hillier Group.
The winner in the Pre-Engineered Building category was Gorski Construction Company Inc. for Jeff D’Ambrosio Dodge and Mitsubishi.
This was a design/build project.
Corrado & Sons Inc., was the winner in the Specialty Residential category for a private residence in Bryn Mawr.
This was designed by Peter Zimmerman Architects.
In the Commercial Under $2 Million category, Worthington Associates won first place for the Christmas Gallery at Byers’ Choice Ltd. in Chalfont.
The building was designed by Richard Kapusta and Company Architects and Planners.
Receiving the award for the Best Commercial Project Over $2 Million was R & R Kelly Associates Ltd., a general contractor in Oaks, for the Wynn Group Volkswagen dealership in Norristown.
The architect for the project was Warren Beltz.
ABC members who served as specialty contractors and suppliers on all the projects entered also were also recognized. Competition finalists also received awards of merit.
“Our annual awards contest continues to be a tremendous success, receiving wide support and accolades from both members and non members. The construction user is becoming more and more aware of the capabilities of our members, and most major developers and owners understand the value of building with Merit Contractors,” said Geoffrey N. Zeh, executive vice president.
The purpose of the construction awards program is to showcase the high quality construction offered by the association’s membership to the construction user market.
Projects were judged by an objective set of criterion, based on category entered, which evaluated such components as HVAC and plumbing, walls, exterior skin of building, wall and floor covering, landscaping and paving.
Over the past 11 years, more than 350 projects have been entered in this annual competition, representing close to a billion dollars of construction in the Delaware Valley region.
